A Dreamy Sunset Surprise Proposal at Clover Point

Sunset proposals by the ocean are always so beautiful, and this one at Clover Point, Victoria BC was nothing short of unforgettable. As a Victoria wedding and engagement photographer, I get to witness some of the most emotional and meaningful moments in people’s lives, and this surprise engagement was such a special one to capture and be part of!

Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal

This proposal was weeks in the making. The soon to be fiancé reached out ahead of time so we could plan every detail together. From location and timing to weather and lighting, we were prepared for whatever that evening was going to bring! When I am planning in the planning stage for surprise proposals, I always help with guidance through the logistics so when the moment arrives, it can feel natural and stress-free.

I made sure to send photo and maps of different spots along Dallas road and Clover Point ahead of time so we could choose the best lighting and backdrop for sunset. Another fun logistic was getting to manage the time change that happened to fall on the same weekend (some quick math was required). Dallas Road (including Clover Point) in Victoria is one of my favourite locations for proposals because of the open ocean views, incredible sunsets and stunning coastlines so I knew this evening was going to be beautiful!

A Windy but Beautiful Evening

The week leading up to the proposal the forecast was calling for rain, and a lot of it. To the point we debated a last-minute change to the following day if required. The good news is I’m always prepared to shoot rain or shine; it really just comes down to the comfortability of the couple. We ended up locking in on the decision that it was going to happen to matter what, with clear umbrellas waiting on the sidelines if required!

On the day of the proposal, we stayed in touch throughout the afternoon as we woke up to a beautiful clear day. However, if you’ve spent time at Clover Point, you know how windy it can get, and this evening was definitely one of those days. With a walk along the point before sunset, these two actually finished their walk earlier than expected. This meant he had to stall for a bit before heading to the exact proposal spot we had planned. Meanwhile, I was already nearby trying to stay hidden in plain sight and also trying not to blow away in the wind!

The Moment She Said Yes!

As the sun started to set, these two wandered to the edge of the point, pausing to take in the view together. While they stood there, I quietly positioned my camera, ready for what was about to unfold.

Then, gently, he turned to her and dropped to one knee, asking one very special question.

She said yes!

The wind picked up in that moment, making it all feel even more cinematic and beautiful. As I captured the joy and love these two shared in those first moments of celebration, I finally revealed myself as part of the plan. It was such a privilege to witness something so genuine and to play a part in their love story.

Why I Love Photographing Surprise Proposals

Surprise proposals are honestly one of my favourite things to photograph. As a Victoria, BC wedding and engagement photographer, I love helping plan each moment from start to finish. From choosing the perfect location and lighting, dreaming up a concept that feels unique to each couple, and to figuring out the best way for me to stay hidden until the big question is asked.

There’s something incredibly special about being part of that secret planning process. I get to watch the excitement build as we coordinate all the details, and then witness everything unfold naturally in real time.

Surprise proposals are always genuine, emotional, and completely unforgettable.
